Embroidery is the art or handicraft of decorating fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. Chain-stitch embroidery is an ancient art form that has been passed down in nomadic Kazakh people—especially in Mongolian Kazakhs. It is unknown just how far back this folk art form dates, but it is thought to be thousands of years old as traditional embroidery was found on clothing in ancient graves. The nomadic people of Mongolia and Kazakhstan lived in round tents known as “gers” or “yurts”. While the men were out hunting or working with their herds, the women would spend their time embroidering to decorate of their homes. Then when Kazakhstan turned socialist, people settled into structured homes, became agrarian based, and lost the need for this art form. However, the Mongolian Kazakhs kept the traditional embroidery alive together with their nomadic lifestyle and ger homes. Kazak traditional embroidery is a dying art form. Our company was found women who still carry knowledge of the trade and has brought them together with a passion to help keep this art form alive. Embroidered wall hangings are still used to decorate Kazakh ger homes.
